What's the area around Aveley like?

For anyone buying or renting in Aveley.

Aveley has far more open ground around it than a village this built up would lead you to expect. A park or green space is a couple of hundred metres from most front doors. Water is a short walk away. Private gardens are a decent size. None of it is protected scenery, so you get the woods without the visitor centre.

On average, Aveley homes have 17 green spaces within a kilometre, and the nearest is about 210 metres away. Belhus Park is on the national register of historic parks and gardens, and much of the old Belhus estate is now a country park and the Belhus golf course. A landscape laid out to impress the gentry's guests now mostly gets walked by dogs.

Open water is about 440 metres from the average home, with 14 bodies of water within a kilometre. For a village set back from the Thames, that's a lot of places to sit by the water.

The nearest stretch of the National Cycle Network is about 1.2 kilometres away on average, and no postcode in Aveley is right next to it. There's no ancient woodland inside the area. The country park on the old Belhus land supplies the trees, so the woodland on your doorstep is a country park.

The rated-premises records count 111 shops in and around Aveley, 9 pubs and 5 restaurants. Nine pubs to five restaurants tells you where an evening out in Aveley usually goes.

Thurrock's average level of fine particles in the air was about 8 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024, a figure for the whole council area.

The village is ringed by its neighbours: Wennington and Rainham to the west, Purfleet and South Ockendon to the south and east, and the London boroughs close enough to see. Sport means non-League football at Parkside, home to Aveley & Hashtag United. The old Thurrock club used to play at Ship Lane until it folded. Football in Aveley has had a club that folded and a club with a hashtag in its name.

Private gardens add up to about 67,000 square metres for every 1,000 residents across Aveley's six neighbourhood areas. That's a lot of back garden for a built-up village, and it explains why the planning applications here are mostly about building into it.

The valuation list has 187 rateable business premises in Aveley: shops, warehouses, offices and a run of industrial units. These are premises on the valuation list, and some may not be trading. There are 42 offices on the list and not a single registered holiday let, which tells you exactly who Aveley is for.

Of the 32 food businesses with a published hygiene rating, about 56% have the top score of five and about 6% are near the bottom. For a village this size, that's a solid record.

Natural England records no area of outstanding natural beauty, no site of special scientific interest and no ancient woodland overlapping Aveley. The green space here belongs to people who live here, and nobody has designated it for the benefit of anyone else.

What surrounds Aveley is one of its real strengths: parks, water and big gardens all close at hand, and none of it set aside for visitors.
