Is Aveley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Aveley.

Aveley is safer than the borough around it, and nothing in its record is dramatic. Crime runs about a tenth below the Thurrock rate. Violence makes up exactly the same share as it does nationally. Cars take more of the hit than they would elsewhere. Most of what goes wrong here is damage to property, and very little of it is anything to lose sleep over.

Police recorded 999 crimes in Aveley in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 92 per 1,000 residents. That's roughly 10% below the Thurrock average. The most dangerous residents on record are the lion and the brown bear whose remains came out of the clay pit on Sandy Lane, and nobody has seen either of them on the high street for a very long time.

For comparison, Thurrock as a whole ran at about 102 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year. Both rates come from published police figures. The rate for Aveley is a village figure, and a street can sit either side of it. The street-level crime map on police.uk is the quick check for the roads around a particular house, and it takes about five minutes.

Aveley is built up, at about 5,100 people per square kilometre on average. Unemployment is about 3%, and about 7% of households are overcrowded. That makes it a busy, working village of family houses. None of those figures sets the crime rate, and two of them are low.

Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up about 35% of Aveley's recorded crime. That's the same as the national share. Vehicle crime makes up 13% against 5% nationally, and criminal damage and arson 11% against 7%, so those two are where Aveley runs above the national pattern. Anti-social behaviour is 12% against 16% nationally, other theft 7% against 7%, and public order 6% against 7%. On anti-social behaviour, the stereotype of the bored Essex estate gets less support from Essex Police's own records than from the people who repeat it.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how often crime happens, and it's measured across the whole force. Essex Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 28th of 42 forces. About 37% of cases end with no suspect identified. That's what to expect if something does happen. It's a figure for the whole force, and it doesn't tell you how likely anything is to happen in Aveley.

Aveley is one of the safer parts of Thurrock. Its crime rate is below the borough's, its violence is at the national share, and the main extra risk is to cars and property.
