Aveley's schools are one of the better reasons to buy here. About four in five graded schools across the borough are good or better. Three are outstanding. Only one has been rated inadequate. The ones that matter to an Aveley family are within a short walk or a short drive.
Thurrock has 24 schools with a published Ofsted grade, and 19 of them are good or outstanding, which is close to four in every five. Three are outstanding, 16 good, four require improvement and one is inadequate. Another 25 settings across the borough have no published grade yet and don't appear in those counts either way. The figures cover all of Thurrock, so they describe the pool Aveley's schools belong to and say nothing about any one of them.
The primaries that carry Aveley's name or sit closest to its own history are Aveley Primary School and Kenningtons Primary Academy, and Kenningtons appears on both the primary list and the national register of listed buildings. Places go out under Thurrock Council's published admissions rules, so living near Aveley Primary or Kenningtons gives a child priority only as far as those rules allow, and a house on the right road won't get you a place by itself. Asking the council how far from each school last year's final offer reached is the one piece of homework worth doing ahead of a purchase. Bonnygate Primary School, Benyon Primary School and Somers Heath Primary School are among the others in the surrounding list, and between them a family isn't relying on a single gate. "Walking distance to schools" in a property description has never put anyone's name on an offer letter.
For secondary age, the local list has Ormiston Park Academy and Harris Academy Ockendon, and Beacon Hill Academy also appears in the area. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest primary about 11 minutes' walk from a typical Aveley home and the nearest secondary about 17 minutes on foot or 9 by car. The bus times in that model have had several years to change since, though the walks haven't. Aveley produced a crime novelist and a concert pianist without anyone checking which school had the shortest walk, and most families here can now have both a decent school and a short walk.
Aveley's schools are one of its real strengths: the borough's graded schools are overwhelmingly good or better, and the nearest primary and secondary are close enough to walk to. Families should work out the admissions rules early and spend the energy they save on the walk.
