Amesbury

Britain's oldest town, permanently upstaged by rocks·Wiltshire·South West England

Amesbury has been continuously occupied since roughly nine thousand years before anyone thought to build Stonehenge a car park, and the town has spent every one of those years being slightly overshadowed by a pile of rocks a mile up the road. It is a working Wiltshire town with a garrison's haircut and an A303 running past it, where the tourists arrive, photograph a neolithic monument, and leave without ever discovering the town exists. Which suits everyone here perfectly well. The oldest settlement in Britain, and its main achievement is that nobody stops.
