Who lives in Wroughton?

For anyone buying or renting in Wroughton.

Wroughton is lived in by people who've finished moving house. Nearly eight in ten own their home. The typical resident is about fifty. Fewer than one household in ten rents privately. This is where people stop browsing property sites, not where they start.

Every population figure on this page comes from the 2021 Census unless it says otherwise. About 77% of households own their home, outright or with a mortgage, about 9% rent privately and about 13% rent from a council or housing association. Private landlords are a small presence here, which suits the owners and frustrates anyone hoping to rent a place for a year and see how it goes.

The median age is 50. People aged 25 to 44 make up about 19% of residents, so the young-professional crowd exists, but it's outnumbered. Wroughton isn't where people come to start out. It's where they come once they've worked out what they want, and it tends to be a semi with a garden and a view of the Downs.

Household income averaged about £57,000 a year before tax in the financial year to March 2023, a gross figure modelled by the Office for National Statistics across the wider area rather than a count of payslips. That describes a comfortable place, not a wealthy one, and it describes it as it was a few years ago rather than today. Nobody's parking a yacht on the drive, but the drive's paid for.

About 29% of households are one person living alone, and about 18% are a single pensioner living alone, a group that sits inside that one-person figure rather than on top of it. Couples with dependent children make up about 20% of households and lone parents about 8%. The families are here, but they share the street with a larger number of people whose children left years ago and whose spare rooms have since become somewhere to put the exercise bike nobody uses.

About 30% of adults hold a degree-level qualification and about 17% have no formal qualifications, which is a broad mix rather than a monoculture. Full-time students make up about 2% of residents, so nobody should expect a student scene, or student parking wars, or students.

About 81% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Across the Swindon council area as a whole, the rate of deaths considered preventable is similar to England's, and so is smoking, at about 9% of adults. Those are borough-wide figures with an England benchmark, not a measure of Wroughton's own residents.

About 88 people live in communal settings such as care homes rather than private households, out of about 7,600 residents. That's too small to change how the other figures read.

Wroughton's population is settled, comfortable and mostly on the property ladder's upper rungs, with enough families and first-timers to stop it becoming a retirement village. It's a good place for people who've decided where they want to be.
