Is Wroughton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wroughton.

Yes, Wroughton is one of the safer corners of the Swindon borough. Crime runs about a third below the borough average. Unemployment barely registers. Overcrowding hardly exists. Quiet is the default setting here, not an achievement.

Police figures put recorded crime at about 59 offences per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, with 517 crimes recorded over those twelve months. That published rate sits about 33% below the Swindon average. For a place with the population of a small town, that's a low number, and nobody should expect it to be zero.

To see what that gap looks like, the Swindon-wide rate over the same period is about 88 per 1,000, against about 59 here. Both are published figures on the same basis, so the comparison is fair: Wroughton is noticeably calmer than the borough it belongs to, and the motorway between them is a coincidence the residents enjoy mentioning anyway.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is suburban rather than rural, at about 2,600 people per square kilometre on average across its statistical areas. Unemployment sits at about 2% and overcrowding at about 1%. That's the texture of a settled, owner-occupied place with room to spare, which is descriptive, not a theory of crime. Plenty of busy places are safe and plenty of quiet ones have their moments.

The mix of what does get recorded looks much like everywhere else. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up about 33% of local crime against about 35% nationally, so slightly below the usual share rather than a warning sign. Anti-social behaviour runs at about 18% here against 16% nationally, and public order at about 8% against 7%, both close to the national pattern. Shoplifting at about 8% and criminal damage and arson at about 7% match the national shares almost exactly. The one that stands out is burglary, at about 8% of local crime against about 4% nationally. That's a bigger slice of a smaller total, and it's the category worth thinking about when you look at locks, lighting and the back of the house, rather than a sign that the village has a burglary problem it's keeping quiet about.

What happens after a crime is reported is a separate question from how much crime there is. Wiltshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 32nd of 42 forces. That's a force-wide figure over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, not a Wroughton rate, and about 34% of the force's cases closed with no suspect identified. In a place this quiet, the odds of needing the police are lower than average; the odds of them catching someone when you do are slightly below average too, and that's a conversation for Wiltshire, not the village.

Safety is one of Wroughton's real strengths. The crime rate is low, the mix is ordinary, and burglary is the one line worth a second look.
