Whitton is about as safe as the rest of Richmond borough, which makes it ordinary for London. Crime runs level with the borough. Violence is well under its national share. Vehicle crime is well over it. Whitton's crime problem mostly involves the cars on the drives.
The Metropolitan Police recorded 3,247 crimes in Whitton in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate works out at about 73 per 1,000 people. That's level with the borough, and a handful of incidents either way would flip which side of the line it falls.
Across Richmond upon Thames as a whole, the published rate for the same year was about 74 per 1,000. Whitton's 73 is a rounding error below that. A buyer comparing the two should read them as the same number, because the gap is too small to say anything about either place.
Whitton is a built-up suburb, with about 6,970 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods. About 3% of working-age residents were unemployed and about 4% of households were overcrowded at the 2021 Census. That describes a settled, employed, family suburb, and crime here runs at the borough's level, no higher.
The mix is where Whitton differs. Violence and sexual offences, the largest category almost everywhere and one that includes common assault without injury, make up about 25% of crime here against about 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour runs at about 20% against 16% nationally. Vehicle crime is about 11% against 5%, and criminal damage and arson about 11% against 7%. Shoplifting at about 6% and other theft at about 6% are close to their national shares of 8% and 7%. Put together, Whitton has less violence than most places and more trouble with cars, fences and windows. The police's online crime map shows which streets the incidents are recorded on, and it's worth five minutes for the road you're looking at.
What happens after a report is a force-wide matter. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. None of that measures how safe Whitton is. It measures what London's police manage once something has already happened, and for a scratched car the honest expectation is a crime number for the insurer.
The original danger in Whitton was gunpowder. The mills on the River Crane were sited away from built-up areas so that accidental explosions would hurt fewer people, and they made powder there until 1927. The bar for a bad day here was set high and early.
On safety, Whitton is average, neither a worry nor a selling point. Most of the crime is aimed at property, and the violence figures are lower than the national picture.
