Who lives in Westward Ho!?

For anyone buying or renting in Westward Ho!.

People who have finished commuting, mostly. About seven in ten own their homes. Four in ten households are one person on their own. The typical resident is nearer sixty than forty. This is a village that recruits from the second half of life, and it has never pretended otherwise.

Census 2021, the source for every population figure on this page, puts owner-occupation at about 70% and private renting at about 25%. That is a settled place with a working rental sector attached rather than a village where people are passing through, and it means most of your neighbours made a decision rather than took what was going.

The median age is 58. Residents aged 25 to 44 account for about 16% of the population. Nobody should be surprised by that in a coastal village with no railway station, but it does mean the rhythm of the week here is set by people whose diaries are their own rather than by the school run and the seven-forty into town.

On money, the modelled household income for the area was about £42,400 gross, before any tax comes off, describing the financial year to March 2023 rather than the position today. After tax, the same modelling puts it nearer £35,200. Those are area estimates rather than payslips, and in a place where a good share of households are retired, income figures describe pensions and savings as much as wages.

Household make-up is where the character shows. About 41% of households are a single person living alone. About 22% are a pensioner living alone, which sits inside that first figure rather than beside it. Couples with children account for about 10%, and lone-parent households about 6%. Small households, then, in a housing stock built around bungalows, which is one of the rare cases where the buildings and the people match up without anyone planning it.

Qualifications split three ways. About 28% hold a degree-level qualification, about 20% hold none at all, and about 1% are full-time students. That is a varied spread rather than a uniform one, and it is worth remembering that a place where a fifth of adults left school without formal qualifications and more than a quarter finished university is not the tidy stereotype either half of that sentence suggests on its own.

One number worth reading alongside the rest: 72 people live in communal establishments rather than private households, out of a resident population of 3,740. The area holds 6 care homes, all currently rated good or better by the Care Quality Commission, which is the sort of provision an older village needs and does not always get.

Who lives here is simple enough to describe and slow to change: an owner-occupying, small-household, older village where the average front door opens onto one or two people rather than four. On the broader measures of how those households are doing, it lands in the middle of the national spread, neither struggling nor especially comfortable.
