Is West Malling a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in West Malling.

Yes. West Malling is safe, and the crime figures are pretty dull. Crime runs below the rest of the borough. Hardly anyone is out of work. Very few homes are overcrowded. In crime statistics, dull is exactly what you want.

Kent Police's published figures for the year to May 2026 put the West Malling area at about 58 recorded crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 15% below the Tonbridge and Malling average. Across the same twelve months, 1,783 crimes were recorded in the area. That covers the old town, Kings Hill and the villages around them, not just the High Street.

In numbers, that's about 58 per 1,000 here against about 69 per 1,000 across the borough. It's a real gap, not a rounding error. It doesn't make West Malling crime-free, but it does put it at the quieter end of an already fairly quiet borough.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is fairly comfortable. Averaged across the area's small statistical areas, density works out at about 3,500 people per square kilometre. Unemployment was about 2% at the 2021 census, and only about 2% of households were overcrowded. None of those figures explains crime on its own, but together they describe a settled area of people in work, living in homes big enough for them.

The mix of crime is broadly normal, with a couple of categories running high. Violence and sexual offences make up about 39% of recorded crime here, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere and covers a wide range, including common assault without injury, so on its own it sounds worse than it usually is. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 20% here against 16% nationally, and criminal damage and arson about 11% against 7%. Those two are the ones worth noticing: more nuisance than danger, but above the national share. Other theft is about 7%, level with the national figure. Vehicle crime is about 6% against 5%, and public order offences about 4%, lower than the national 7%.

As for what happens after a report, Kent Police charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it sixth of 42 forces in England and Wales. That's a force-wide figure, not a West Malling one, and it measures what happens after a crime is reported, not how likely a crime is in the first place. In about 36% of cases, the force closes the case with no suspect identified. If your car gets scratched, that second figure is a better guide to whether anyone will be caught.

Safety is one of West Malling's stronger points. Crime is lower than the borough around it, the mix is mostly ordinary, and the main thing to watch is low-level nuisance, not anything that should keep you awake.
