West Ealing is home to graduates in their thirties and early forties, split almost evenly between people with a mortgage and people paying rent. About half own their homes. The typical resident is under forty. Well over half the adults have a degree. It's a place for people at the stage of life where every conversation eventually turns to space.
At the 2021 census, which is the source for every population figure on this page, about 51% of West Ealing households owned their home. About 34% rented privately and 14% from a social landlord. Half the street pays a mortgage and the other half pays one on someone else's behalf.
The median resident is 39, and about 33% of residents are aged 25 to 44. It's a district of people in their working prime. They're settled enough to want a garden, and the flats they mostly live in don't come with one.
The Office for National Statistics modelled average household income across the area at about £85,700 before tax for the financial year to March 2023. That figure is three years old and gross, and both of those make it look bigger than a monthly bank balance usually does.
Households here are a mix. Lone parents head about 11% of them, and couples with children make up about 21%, so there are families, but they are well short of the majority.
About 30% of households are one person living alone, and about 10% are a pensioner on their own, a group that's included in that 30%. Flats carved out of houses built for Edwardian families now often hold a single adult and a bike.
About 58% of adults hold a degree or equivalent, about 11% have no formal qualifications and about 2% are full-time students. Students barely register, and most of the graduates finished university some time ago. With that many degrees spread across nine pubs, the quiz nights must be competitive.
At the 2021 census about 87% of West Ealing residents described their health as good or very good, and about 4% as bad or very bad. Across the London Borough of Ealing, the rate of deaths from preventable causes is better than England's, and smoking runs at about 7%, a rate the national comparison rates as similar to England's.
West Ealing's residents are better off than many of their London neighbours. Mostly they're educated, mid-career and healthy, and evenly split between owners and renters, with some deprivation alongside the degrees.
