What are the schools like in Wembury?

For anyone buying or renting in Wembury.

Wembury has one school of its own and borrows the rest. The village primary is genuinely in the village. Secondary is a car journey into somebody else's postcode. Four in five graded schools across the county come out good or better. So the schools are strong, and the school run is the price of admission.

There is one mainstream state primary in the area, and it has the good manners to be called Wembury Primary School. Key stage two maths in the area averages a scaled score of 106, which sits above the expected standard rather than politely level with it. Department for Transport modelling puts the nearest primary at roughly 8 minutes by car, about 18 minutes on foot and around 13 minutes by public transport, which for a village at the end of a peninsula means the primary years are the easy ones. Enjoy them. They end.

Across Devon as a whole, Ofsted has published grades for 172 settings, of which 138 are good or better, three are outstanding and 31 require improvement. Three are rated inadequate. That is a county-wide count rather than a Wembury one, so treat it as the weather rather than the forecast: the local authority you are buying into inspects well overall, with a tail that exists and is small. A further 135 settings hold no published overall grade yet, which means not yet inspected under the current arrangements, not quietly bad.

Naming a school is not the same as getting into it. Devon allocates places by its own admissions rules, and living within sight of a school gate has never been a guarantee of walking through it. Oversubscription does what oversubscription does, and the offer letter in the spring is the only document that settles the question. Anyone buying a house on the strength of an assumed catchment should confirm the current admissions criteria with the local authority before the survey, not after the exchange.

For secondary, the realistic options are Plymstock School and Coombe Dean School, both on the Plymouth side and both a drive. Modelling puts the nearest secondary at about 13 minutes by car, roughly 22 minutes by public transport and around 55 minutes on foot, and no eleven-year-old in recorded history has chosen the third of those. Sherford Vale School and Nursery is the newest primary in the wider area, built for a population that arrived after the maps were drawn. The rest of the primary provision sits in the Plymstock and Elburton band of suburbs, a cluster of academies and community schools serving the estates rather than the peninsula, and they are the ones parents here compare when the village primary is full.

Schools are one of Wembury's real strengths, provided your definition of a good school includes the fifteen minutes of driving it takes to reach the secondary one.
