Is Wembury a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wembury.

Yes, and not by a narrow margin. Crime here runs at roughly half the district rate. Sixty-seven recorded offences across an entire year. Almost nobody in the village is out of work. The live question in Wembury is not whether something will happen to you, it is whether anyone would be caught if it did.

Police recorded 67 crimes across the area in the twelve months to May 2026, which works out as a published rate of about 23 offences per thousand residents. That is the figure as published, calculated against the statistical population base the police use rather than a headcount of the village, so it is the number to quote and not one to re-derive at home. Sixty-seven is a small enough total that a single busy fortnight would move it, which is worth remembering before reading too much into any month.

The comparison that matters is the district. Across South Hams as a whole, the rate over the same twelve months came to about 49 offences per thousand residents. Wembury's own rate sits roughly 52% below that. South Hams is not exactly Gotham to begin with, so being half of it puts the village somewhere near the quiet end of a quiet county.

The texture behind those numbers is ordinary rather than dramatic. Averaged across the two neighbourhood statistical areas covering the village, population density comes to roughly 1,217 people per square kilometre, which sounds urban until you remember that a compact core surrounded by protected farmland produces exactly that arithmetic. Unemployment runs at about 1%. Overcrowded households come to about 1% as well. None of that causes the crime rate, and anyone claiming a clean line from one to the other is selling something. It does describe the kind of place this is: settled, occupied, and with very few empty hours in the day when nobody is looking out of a window.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and a less flattering one. Devon and Cornwall Police charged a suspect in about 8% of cases over the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, and the force ranks 42nd of the 42 forces in England and Wales on that measure. About 26% of cases were closed with no suspect identified at all. Those are force-wide figures covering everything from Plymouth to the Isles of Scilly, not Wembury's own outcomes, and they answer a different question from the crime rate. Low crime and low charge rates are perfectly capable of coexisting, which is a polite way of saying that very little happens here and rather little is resolved when it does.

Safety is one of Wembury's genuine strengths, and it is not a close call. Buy here and the thing most likely to go missing is your enthusiasm for driving anywhere after dark.
