Schools are one of the best things about Welham Green, and most of the credit goes to the county around it. The village has its own primary. Results at the primaries nearby are solid. Secondary school means leaving the village. Hertfordshire's inspection record is the strongest card in the pack, and every family here gets dealt it.
There are three mainstream state primary schools in the area, and their pupils averaged a maths score of about 105 at key stage 2. Welham Green's own Church of England primary is the obvious first choice, with Brookmans Park Primary School and the primaries around Hatfield, such as De Havilland Primary School, within reach. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest primary about 13 minutes' walk from a typical home, or about 7 minutes by car. The primary years are the easy stretch, and most children can walk to school.
There is one mainstream state secondary in the area, and its pupils averaged about 48 on Attainment 8, the government's measure of results across eight GCSE subjects. Chancellor's School, Onslow St Audrey's School and Bishop's Hatfield Girls' School are among the secondaries in the wider area. The same 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 38 minutes away on foot, about 25 minutes by public transport and about 12 minutes by car. A 13-minute walk at age ten becomes a lift to school at eleven, and in Welham Green the school run is the first thing the car is used for.
Hertfordshire County Council's area holds 227 schools and settings with a published Ofsted grade, and 203 of them are good or outstanding, which is close to nine in ten. Forty are outstanding, 21 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. There are also 226 settings across the county that have yet to receive a grade, and those are left out of the count. With an inadequate grade this rare, any Hertfordshire parent who finds one on their shortlist was unlucky with the map.
Admissions follow Hertfordshire's published rules, and the rules decide who gets a place, so a house down the road from the village primary or from one of the Hatfield secondaries doesn't secure one. Read the admissions criteria for the secondary you have in mind and how last year's places were allocated, because the secondary is where the distance from Welham Green starts to count. Plenty of parents here can recite those criteria faster than the bus times.
The schools are a clear strength. The village primary covers the early years close to home, and from age eleven the county's inspection record takes over.
