Is Watford a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Watford.

Watford is safer than the borough it gives its name to. Its crime rate comes in about a tenth below the borough's. Most of the crime mix tracks the national pattern closely. Anti-social behaviour is the one category that runs ahead. A busy commuter town with a lively centre, recording less than its own council area: that is the shape of it.

Police.uk records about 102 crimes per 1,000 residents across the Watford area in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, roughly 11% below the average for the local authority. That is 15,053 recorded crimes over the twelve months, published by the police for each small neighbourhood and added up for the town. A full year of reports is enough that no single bad weekend can drag the figure anywhere.

The borough of Watford as a whole runs at about 114 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against the area's 102. The area measured here reaches beyond the borough into places like South Oxhey and Carpenders Park, so the comparison is a town held up against its own council patch, and the town comes out ahead.

The setting is dense and busy. On average there are about 7,300 people per square kilometre in the area's neighbourhoods, unemployment was about 3% at the 2021 Census, and about 8% of households were overcrowded. That is a working town packed tightly around a main-line station, with a centre that fills up at night when the High Street's bars and clubs open.

The crime mix sits close to the national one almost everywhere. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault where nobody is injured, make up about 34% of recorded crime here against about 35% across England and Wales. Shoplifting is about 8% in both. Other theft runs at about 8% against 7% nationally, criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%, and public order offences about 6% against 7%. The outlier is anti-social behaviour, about 20% of reports here against about 16% nationally, which is the noise end of the list. A walk past the streets nearest the town centre late on a Friday night is the check worth making, since the daytime viewing is the one hour a week that tells you least. The town's most famous riot came in 1902, when people turned out angry because the celebration for Edward VII's coronation had been postponed, so the local record of trouble over a night out is an old one.

After a report, the picture belongs to the whole county. Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 23rd of 42 forces over the year to May 2026. In about 40% of its cases the investigation closes with nobody identified at all. Those are force numbers covering every town in Hertfordshire, and they measure what the police manage after the event, which is a different question from how likely the event was.

Watford is a safe place by the measures that count, safer than its own borough and close to the national pattern in what does happen, with the town centre on a weekend night the main exception worth knowing about.
