Is Wadhurst a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Wadhurst.

Wadhurst is safe, and almost dull about it. Crime runs well below the Wealden rate. Hardly anyone is out of work. Hardly anyone lives packed in. Anyone moving here for excitement has misread the brochure.

Police figures for the year to May 2026 put Wadhurst's crime rate at about 40 per 1,000 residents, roughly 28% below the average for Wealden as a whole. That rate covers 210 recorded crimes over the same twelve months. In a town this size, that works out as the sort of number that gets discussed at length on the community noticeboard precisely because there isn't much else to discuss.

Set side by side, the gap is plain: about 40 crimes per 1,000 in Wadhurst against about 55 per 1,000 across Wealden. Wealden is not a rough district to begin with, so beating its average by that margin puts Wadhurst in the quiet end of an already quiet part of Sussex.

The numbers come from a settled, spread-out sort of place. Population density averages about 1,360 people per square kilometre across the town's neighbourhoods, unemployment sits at about 2% and about 2% of households are overcrowded. None of that proves why crime is low, but it describes a town where most people have a job, room to live in and a neighbour who notices a strange van.

The crime mix needs handling with care, because the totals are small enough that a handful of incidents moves any share by several points. Violence and sexual offences make up about 31% of recorded crime, slightly below the national share of about 35%, and that category covers a wide range, down to common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour is the one that stands out, at about 27% against about 16% nationally. Other theft and criminal damage and arson each sit at about 9%, against about 7% nationally, public order at about 8% against about 7%, and burglary at about 5% against about 4%. With 210 crimes in total, a few noisy weekends or one persistent group of teenagers can shift those figures, so the mix should not be read as a fixed trait of the town. In a place this quiet, anti-social behaviour is also the category most likely to get reported, because people notice it.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and it is answered at force level rather than town level. Sussex Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year to May 2026, which places it 35th of 42 forces. About 48% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures covering the whole county and say nothing about how safe Wadhurst is. They do tell a victim what to expect: if something is taken from the shed, the realistic outcome is a crime reference number for the insurer.

Safety is one of Wadhurst's real strengths: crime runs well below an already low district average, and the main risk to a quiet life here is that it stays that way.
