Is Toddington, Bedfordshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Toddington, Bedfordshire.

Toddington is less safe than its fields suggest. The wider area records about 81 crimes a year for every thousand residents. That's a quarter above the rest of its county. Much of it is nuisance more than danger. The rural setting doesn't keep the numbers down here.

Bedfordshire Police recorded 782 crimes across Toddington and its surrounding villages in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 81 per thousand residents. That puts the area roughly 24% above the Central Bedfordshire average. The total covers Chalgrave, Tebworth, Wingfield, Harlington and Streatley as well as the village itself, so the figure belongs to the whole patch. Where in it the crimes happened is a separate question.

Across Central Bedfordshire, the published rate is about 65 crimes per thousand residents, so Toddington's area runs at about 81 against the county's 65. The difference is about the size of one extra crime for every sixty or so neighbours, enough that people notice it in conversation. It's still far short of the kind of number that would make the evening news.

The neighbourhood looks unremarkable. Population density averages about 2,630 people per square kilometre across the area's postcodes, unemployment is about 2% and only about 2% of homes are overcrowded. The usual explanations for a high crime rate don't fit Toddington, and nothing else on record offers one. None of those three explains the figure.

The mix is where the area looks different. Antisocial behaviour makes up about 33% of recorded crime here, against 16% across England and Wales, and vehicle crime about 10%, against 5% nationally. Violence and sexual offences, the largest category almost everywhere and a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, is about 28% here against 35% nationally, a smaller share than usual. Criminal damage and arson (6% against 7%), public order offences (6% against 7%) and other theft (5% against 7%) all track close to the national pattern. In a village where nearly everyone gets around by car, the car is also what tends to get broken into, and the rest is people being a nuisance where they can be heard. Look up the specific road on the Police.uk crime map over a full year. A buyer here needs to know where the antisocial behaviour reports cluster, and the parish-wide rate can't say.

Charging happens across the whole force, so this part describes the force and tells you nothing about Toddington itself. Bedfordshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 36th of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 38% of its cases close with no suspect identified. If someone breaks into your car here, the odds are against anyone being charged for it. That is a measure of the force's results, and the crime rate above is a separate question.

Toddington's safety record is below average. The problem is a steady run of nuisance and car crime, more than anything dangerous, and that is what a buyer here should expect.
