Who lives in Tidworth?

For anyone buying or renting in Tidworth.

Tidworth is a town of young families renting the roof over their heads. Most households rent rather than own. The typical resident is 28. Four in ten households are a couple with children. Retired people living on their own are scarce. This is not a place people age into. It is a place people occupy while the children are small.

Census 2021, the source for every population figure here, puts owner occupation at about 28% of households. Private renting runs at about 51% and social renting at about 20%. In most English towns the owner-occupier is the default setting and the renter is the exception. Here that arrangement is inverted, and it is the single most important fact about the place, which is naturally the one no listing ever opens with.

The age profile is narrow in a way few towns manage. The median resident is 28, and about 41% of the population falls between 25 and 44. That is a town running almost entirely in one life stage, with the nursery years and the primary school years happening simultaneously on every street.

Household make-up follows from that. Around 42% of households are a couple with children and about 11% are headed by a lone parent. People living alone account for about 16% of households, and pensioners living alone about 4%, which sits inside that 16% rather than adding to it. A town where the pensioner living quietly on their own is the rarest household type is a town with a very specific rhythm to its weekday mornings.

On qualifications, about 26% of residents hold a degree-level qualification, about 11% hold none, and roughly 2% are full-time students. That is a mixed profile rather than a graduate enclave or its opposite, and the small student share confirms what the rest of it says: this is a working town, not one built around a campus. Unemployment sits at about 2%, which is the number behind the empty streets at ten in the morning.

Health reads well. About 91% of residents report their health as good or very good and about 2% report it as bad or very bad, which is roughly what a population this young looks like when it fills in a form. Widening the lens to Wiltshire as a whole, the local authority's preventable mortality rate comes in better than England and adult smoking sits similar to England. Both of those are county figures measured against an England benchmark rather than Tidworth's own, and neither says anything about the people here specifically.

One structural point changes how all of that should be read. Out of a population of 10,693, some 1,094 residents live in communal accommodation rather than private households, with 9,599 in houses and flats. Every household share above describes the second group. The barracks population is counted, it lives here, and it does not show up in a tenure table at all.

The people of Tidworth are young, employed, healthy and mostly halfway through a posting, and by every measure the census offers this is a comfortable town rather than a struggling one. Anyone shopping for the neighbour who has been three doors down for thirty years is looking in the wrong place, and anyone who wants a street where the children all start school in the same week has found exactly the right one.
