What are the schools like in Tadley?

For anyone buying or renting in Tadley.

Tadley's schools are good, and the local secondary doesn't even live in Tadley. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. The primaries are a short walk from most front doors. The secondary sits in the next village along. Parents' real battle is with the admissions form, not the league tables.

At primary level, the town is well served for its size. There are four mainstream state primaries in the area, and their average Key Stage 2 maths score comes out at about 104. The names a Tadley parent will hear first are Tadley Community Primary, Burnham Copse Primary and the Bishopswood Infant and Junior pair, with The Priory Primary also serving the town. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling put the nearest primary about 14 minutes' walk from the average home, which means the school run can be done on foot by anyone prepared to leave before the car would have warmed up.

Secondary pupils in state education mostly go to The Hurst School, which sits over the border in Baughurst. The same 2019 modelling had the nearest secondary around 41 minutes away on foot, 12 by car and about 28 by public transport. So the walk that works at five stops working at eleven, and the family car picks up a second shift.

The wider inspection picture is strong. Across Hampshire, Ofsted has graded 185 of 211 settings good or better, which is close to nine in ten. Of those, 27 are rated outstanding. At the other end, 16 settings require improvement and 10 are rated inadequate. These counts cover the whole county authority rather than Tadley's own schools, so they describe the system a Tadley family is applying into, not a verdict on any individual gate. A further 226 settings hold no published grade yet and are left out of those figures altogether.

None of this guarantees a place. A school named on this page, or the one nearest your front door, is not a promise of admission; Hampshire allocates on its own published criteria, and those change from year to year. Check the current rules for the specific school before the offer goes in on a house, not after the offer letter comes back. Buyers who treat "near the primary" as "in the primary" tend to learn the difference in April, which is late in the day to be learning anything.

Several nearby schools that still turn up in old listings and forum threads have closed. Any sales particulars that lean on a school without checking it still exists are selling the past.

For families, the schools are one of Tadley's genuine selling points: good primaries within walking distance and a county system that grades well. The only real effort goes into the secondary run and the admissions paperwork.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
