Is Tadley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Tadley.

Tadley is safe, and noticeably safer than the rest of its own district. Crime runs well below the Basingstoke and Deane average. The mix of offences looks much like anywhere else in the country. Unemployment and overcrowding barely register. Quiet is the town's default setting, and the published numbers back it.

In the year from June 2025 to May 2026, police records put Tadley's crime rate at about 44 offences per 1,000 residents, roughly 39% below the local-authority average. That covered 924 recorded crimes over the twelve months. Both are published figures, calculated on the statistical areas the police data uses, so they are the rate to quote rather than one to rework on a calculator.

The comparison is sharper with both numbers on the table. Across Basingstoke and Deane as a whole, the rate over the same year was about 72 per 1,000. Tadley's 44 sits a long way under that. For a buyer weighing Tadley against the larger town down the road, this is one of the plainer trade-offs on offer: Basingstoke brings the station and the shops, Tadley brings the lower figure on the crime map.

The neighbourhood texture fits the numbers without explaining them. The average population density across Tadley's statistical areas is about 3,340 people per square kilometre, the texture of a suburban town rather than a packed centre. At the 2021 Census, about 2% of residents were unemployed and about 2% of households were overcrowded. These describe the kind of place Tadley is; none of them is a cause of anything on its own.

The mix of offences needs reading with the national shares beside it, because the labels can sound worse than they are. Violence and sexual offences made up about 42% of Tadley's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That is the largest category almost everywhere, and it is a statutory grouping wide enough to include common assault with no injury, so the heading does more to alarm than the contents usually justify. Anti-social behaviour came in at about 15%, against 16% nationally, so close to typical. Criminal damage and arson took about 9% and public order offences about 9%, each against about 7% nationally, a couple of points above the national shape. Shoplifting accounted for about 7% against 8% nationally, and other theft about 6% against 7%. Tadley's mix is mostly the national mix with a slightly different lean, on a much smaller total.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer is less comfortable. Hampshire Constabulary, which polices the town, charged a suspect in about 9% of cases in the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, placing it 38th of 42 forces. About 35% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. These are force-wide figures covering the whole county, not Tadley's own, and they say nothing about how likely a crime is here. They do tell a victim what to expect from the paperwork, which is not always a name at the end of it.

On the measure that matters for choosing a street, safety is among Tadley's clearest strengths: a crime rate well under its district's, and an offence mix with nothing unusual in it.
