Stoke Newington is home to young renters, and owners are the minority. Seven in ten households rent. About a third rent from a social landlord. The typical resident is in their early thirties. Half the adults have a degree, while about a fifth have no qualifications at all.
The 2021 census, which supplies every population figure here, found that only about 29% of households in Stoke Newington own their home. About 36% rent privately and about 33% rent from the council or a housing association. Home owners are outnumbered at any residents' meeting.
The typical resident is 32, and about 37% of residents are aged 25 to 44. That is a population in the middle of its working life, mostly still renting, in a place where buying usually means a flat.
Household income is modelled by the Office for National Statistics at about £72,700 a year before tax for the financial year to March 2023, averaged across the area, or about £50,700 once tax is taken off. That income is three years out of date and averaged across very different households, so it does not tell you what any particular neighbour earns.
Households here are more often families than the age profile suggests. About 20% are couples with children and about 14% are lone parents, so the school run is busier than you might expect in a place where the typical resident is 32.
About 31% of households are one person living alone. Within that group, about 7% of all households are a pensioner living alone. Couples with children and lone parents make up most of the rest of the family picture, and about 14% of households are overcrowded. A flat for one is common here, and a flat that is too small for the family living in it is common too.
About 49% of residents aged 16 and over hold a degree, about 19% have no formal qualifications, and only about 2% are full-time students. Graduates and people with no qualifications live on the same streets here, and both are out in Clissold Park on a Sunday.
About 87% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Hackney's preventable death rate is similar to the England average, and so is its smoking rate, at about 15%. Those are borough-wide comparisons and say nothing about any one street.
As a settled community, Stoke Newington comes out weak. Most residents rent, owners are a minority, and the people living here move through faster than they put down roots.
