The schools are one of the best reasons to live in South Merstham. About nine in ten of Surrey's graded schools are rated good or better. The local primaries do well in maths. The nearest primary school is about a nine-minute walk away. Round here, the school run takes less time than arguing about which school to choose.
There are three state primary schools in the area, and at Key Stage 2 their pupils averaged about 104 in the maths assessment. That's a solid result, not one to put on a banner. Merstham Primary School is the one with the place's name on it and the obvious first stop, and several other primaries sit within a short drive. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about nine minutes' walk from the typical home. For young children that means walking to school, not a car queue at the gates.
There are two state secondary schools in the area, and their pupils averaged an Attainment 8 score of about 55 at the end of Key Stage 4. That's weighted by pupil numbers, so the larger school counts for more. Merstham Park School is the local option, and the same modelling puts the nearest secondary about 14 minutes' walk away. St Bede's School and Carrington School are also within reach, and East Surrey College covers students past sixteen. Fourteen minutes is short enough that teenagers can walk there without complaining about the distance, which doesn't stop them complaining.
Ofsted has graded 159 schools across Surrey, and 147 of them are good or better, about nine in every ten. Thirty are outstanding, seven require improvement and five are inadequate. These figures cover the whole county, not just this corner of it, so they describe the system your child enters rather than the school at the end of your road. Check the latest report for any specific school before relying on it.
Living near a school doesn't guarantee a place there. Admissions follow the council's published rules, those rules change as demand does, and the only boundary that counts is the one in the year you apply. Estate agents like to describe a house as "near" a school. Admissions offices go by distance, rules and the number of places, and they're less generous. Check the admissions criteria before you exchange, not when the offer letter arrives.
The schools are one of South Merstham's real strengths: good results, good grades across the county and a short walk to both primary and secondary. For a family, very little else here counts for as much.
