Is South Merstham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in South Merstham.

South Merstham is less safe than the rest of its borough, and cars get the worst of it. Crime runs about a third above the local average. Vehicle crime takes a much bigger share than it does nationally. Violence is slightly below its usual national share. When you view a house here, ask about the parking before you ask about the burglar alarm.

Police records for June 2025 to May 2026 give South Merstham a published rate of about 98 crimes per 1,000 people, from 1,139 recorded crimes over those twelve months. That puts it roughly 32% above the Reigate and Banstead average. The published rate is calculated on the police's own statistical population, so don't try to recreate it from the census headcount.

Across Reigate and Banstead as a whole, the rate over the same period was about 74 per 1,000. South Merstham's 98 sits next to that. A quarter-mile drive can change your numbers noticeably in this borough, and this is the part of the map where they go up.

The neighbourhood itself doesn't have the usual background you'd expect from a higher crime rate. It houses about 4,880 people per square kilometre, which is denser than the word "Merstham" suggests to anyone picturing the old village. Unemployment is about 3% and overcrowding about 5%, both low. None of these figures explains the crime rate, and they don't claim to. They do show that this is a busy, working, suburban place, not somewhere with the more obvious problems.

The mix is where the real story is. Violence and sexual offences are the largest category at about 32% of recorded crime, slightly below the 35% national share. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards and tops the list almost everywhere, so seeing it first here isn't unusual. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 21%, against 16% nationally. Vehicle crime is about 13%, against 5% nationally, and that's the figure a buyer should notice most. Criminal damage and arson is about 9% against 7%, public order about 8% against 7%, and other theft about 5% against 7%. In short, violence is roughly normal, cars and nuisance are clearly above normal, and petty theft is slightly below.

After a crime is reported, the numbers get less encouraging. Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 30th of the 42 forces. About 36% of its cases close with no suspect identified. These are force-wide figures, so they say nothing specific about South Merstham's streets, and they answer a different question from the crime rate. The crime rate tells you how likely something is to happen. The charge rate tells you how likely it is to be resolved afterwards.

South Merstham is below par on safety, mostly because of car crime and nuisance rather than danger to people. A house with a driveway or garage counts for more here than it does in most places.
