Is South Kensington a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in South Kensington.

South Kensington has a crime problem, and most of it is aimed at people's belongings. Recorded crime runs more than 40% above the borough's own average. Theft from the person is many times more common here than nationally. Violence makes up a much smaller share than the national mix. The record here is mostly lost property that somebody else found first.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 5,960 crimes in the area in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 261 per 1,000 people. That is roughly 43% above the Kensington and Chelsea average for the same year. For a district best known for dinosaurs, organ music and a tidy garden square, the rate is a long way from tidy.

Set the two rates next to each other and the gap is plain. The borough as a whole runs at about 182 crimes per 1,000 people, and South Kensington at about 261. This is the area pulling the borough's figure up. Whatever reputation the postcode has, the borough average is doing it a favour.

The neighbourhood itself doesn't look like a place with a crime problem. About 13,648 people live in each square kilometre, unemployment is about 2% and about 4% of households are overcrowded. Dense, employed and roomy enough is not the usual setting for a high crime rate, and none of those figures explains it. The residents' own statistics describe the people who sleep here. The crime figures pick up everyone else who passes through.

The mix is where South Kensington stands apart. Violence and sexual offences, the broad statutory group that includes common assault without injury and leads the count almost everywhere, make up about 18% of crime here against about 35% across England and Wales. Other theft accounts for about 17% against 7% nationally, and theft from the person about 12% against 2%. Anti-social behaviour, at about 14% against 16%, is close to the national share. Vehicle crime runs at about 10% against 5%, and shoplifting at about 7% against 8%. Put plainly, the area is more likely than the national average to lose you a phone off a café table and less likely to start a fight with you. If you are viewing a flat, check the street-level crime map on police.uk for the exact address and the streets around it, because a crime map lumps a busy junction and a mews behind it into the same patch.

Getting the culprit is another matter. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases across London, against about 12% nationally, and that is a force-wide figure, unrelated to how safe these streets are. About 53% of the Met's cases close with no suspect identified, and its charge rate ranks 33rd of 42 forces. For the theft that dominates the count here, the odds of getting the thing back are not something to plan around.

South Kensington is a poor bet on safety, with crime well above even its own borough's rate. Most of it comes after your wallet and your phone. You're unlikely to come to harm here, but you'll need to keep an eye on your things.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
