What are the schools like in Silver End?

For anyone buying or renting in Silver End.

The schools around Silver End are good, and the inspection record across the county supports that. Close to nine in ten graded schools in Essex are good or better. The village has its own primary, a short walk from most front doors. Secondary school means a drive or a bus. For a village where three bedrooms is the standard family house, the schooling is one of the parts that does what families need.

Silver End Academy is the village's own primary, and a typical household is about an 11-minute walk from its nearest primary school. There are nine mainstream state primaries in the area, including Rivenhall Church of England Primary School, Cressing Primary School and White Notley Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School in the neighbouring villages. Their pupils average 103 in the Key Stage 2 maths test. That spread of village primaries gives parents real choice within a few miles. Ofsted grades are slow to change, while a school's results can move from one year to the next.

Secondary school is a bigger trip. The two mainstream state secondaries in the area average an Attainment 8 score of about 40, weighted by pupil numbers. Lift Maltings and Lift New Rickstones are both on the list. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 13 minutes away by car and about 22 by public transport, and buses have been cut in many places since 2019. Walking takes nearly 54 minutes, so most pupils go by bus or get a lift for all of secondary school.

Of the 246 Essex schools with a published Ofsted grade, 218 are rated good or better, just under nine in ten. Twenty-two of those are outstanding. Another 23 require improvement and five are inadequate. A further 238 settings have no published overall grade yet, so they are not counted either way.

Places are given out under Essex County Council's published admissions rules, and living near a school does not on its own secure a place there. The council publishes how far away the last child offered a place lived in each recent year, and for a primary like Silver End Academy that one distance is worth more than anything an agent tells you about catchment. Parents who skip that check tend to discover the admissions rules in the April their child is due to start.

For a village this size, the schools are among Silver End's best features: a primary within walking distance, plenty of good alternatives nearby, and a county where good or better is the normal Ofsted grade.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
