Silver End is less safe than the rest of its district, with about 78 recorded crimes for every 1,000 residents. That is about a quarter above the Braintree district average. Violence and theft make up more of the total than usual. Anti-social behaviour makes up less. The model village was planned down to its dance floor and cinema, and the crime rate is the part nobody planned for.
Essex Police recorded 676 crimes in the Silver End area, which takes in the surrounding villages as well as Silver End itself, in the year to May 2026. The published rate for that year is about 78 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 23% above the average for Braintree district.
The district rate for the same year was about 64 per 1,000. Silver End is 14 crimes per 1,000 residents worse off than its neighbours, which is a real gap, though far from the worst part of Essex.
The Silver End area averages about 2,660 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment in the 2021 census was about 2%, and about 2% of households were overcrowded. That describes a settled area of owned family homes with most adults in work. None of those figures explains the crime rate, and the three don't link to it in any simple way.
By category, violence and sexual offences made up 43% of recorded crime, against 35% across England and Wales. That is the largest category almost everywhere, and the legal definition is broad enough to include common assault where nobody was hurt, so the eight-point gap is the part that matters. Other theft made up 12% here, against 7% nationally. Public order offences were 9% against 7%, and vehicle crime 6% against 5%, both close to normal. Criminal damage and arson were 6%, slightly below the national 7%. Anti-social behaviour was 9% of the total against 16% nationally, so the complaint villages most often raise is the one Silver End has less of. If you are looking at a particular house, check its road on the police's own online crime map, which plots reports to the nearest street. The area-wide rate covers several villages, and it won't tell you which part of the map your road is in.
After a crime is reported, Essex Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, putting it 28th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 37% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures, so they describe how the force handles cases across the county, and they say nothing about how safe Silver End's streets are.
On safety, Silver End is below average for its district: it has more violence and theft than you would expect from a village of family homes, even though anti-social behaviour is lower than most places report.
