Schools are one of Sandy's real strengths, and the Ofsted grades across the wider council area are mostly good. Nearly nine in ten graded schools come out good or better. A secondary school carries the town's name. For most homes, a primary is a short walk away. The one big upheaval was the switch that did away with the old middle school, and these days the only people who still talk about it are the ones who went there.
Central Bedfordshire has 59 schools with a published Ofsted grade, and 52 of them, close to nine in ten, are rated good or outstanding. One is outstanding and 51 are good, while 5 require improvement and 2 are inadequate. Another 43 settings across the council area have no published grade yet, which tells you nothing about them in either direction. Across an area that size, one outstanding school is something parents compete for, and good is the normal result.
Until 2018 Sandy used the county's three-tier system of lower, middle and upper schools. The town has since moved to primary and secondary, and its middle school closed in 2019. Sandy Secondary School is the nearest secondary on the list. Department for Transport modelling from 2019 put the nearest secondary about 10 minutes away by car, 18 minutes by public transport and 21 minutes on foot. Nearby primaries include St Swithun's Church of England primary, which shares a name with the parish church rebuilt in 1860, along with Laburnum, Maple Tree and Robert Peel primaries. The nearest primary was modelled at about a 10-minute walk. Places at every one of them are given out under Central Bedfordshire Council's published admissions rules, and those criteria decide who gets in, however close to the gate you live. Reading them for the school you want takes less time than a second viewing. A generation of Sandy children changed school three times, and now they change once, which saves one set of new shoes in September.
Schools are one of the best reasons to choose Sandy. Across the council area the grades are mostly good, and the town has a secondary of its own a short drive or a fair walk from home.
