Is Sandy, Bedfordshire a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Sandy, Bedfordshire.

Sandy is reasonably safe, though crime runs a little higher here than across the rest of Central Bedfordshire. The gap is about a tenth. Most kinds of offence turn up in close to the national proportions. Drugs offences are the one category that stands out. Unemployment is low and very few homes are overcrowded.

Bedfordshire Police published a crime rate for Sandy of about 72 per 1,000 residents in the year to May 2026, roughly 11% above the average for the Central Bedfordshire council area. That came from 977 recorded crimes over the same twelve months. It is a published rate, and it is worked out against a population base set by the statistics bodies, which may differ from Sandy's own head count.

Across the whole Central Bedfordshire council area, the rate over the same year was about 65 per 1,000, against Sandy's 72. The gap between those two numbers is the whole of the "above average" in this answer. Fewer than one in ten Sandy residents would notice it as a difference in daily life. For the street you are looking at, the police's online crime map shows where recent incidents were recorded, and five minutes on it tells you more than either rate.

As neighbourhood texture, Sandy averages about 4,900 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhood areas, about 2% of residents were unemployed at the last census, and about 2% of homes were overcrowded. Those figures describe the town and do nothing to explain its crime rate. Sandy has a nature reserve, a television mast on the heath and a busy main road along one edge, and the mast at least has never been the subject of a police report.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 36% of Sandy's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That is the biggest category almost everywhere, and the legal definition takes in common assault without any injury. Anti-social behaviour is about 17% here against 16% nationally, public order 8% against 7%, criminal damage and arson 7% against 7%, and vehicle crime about 6% against 5%. Drugs offences are the exception, at about 8% of the total against 4% nationally. Everything else on the list stays within a point or so of the national figure.

Charging is decided across the whole force. Bedfordshire Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 36th of 42 forces in England and Wales over the year to May 2026. About 38% of the force's cases closed without a suspect being identified. Those figures describe what happens after a crime is reported anywhere in Bedfordshire. They say nothing about how often crime happens in Sandy.

On safety, Sandy lands in the middle. Crime runs a little above the council area around it, and only the drugs figure stands far from the national pattern.
