Is Probus a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Probus.

Yes, to the point where the question is almost rude. Recorded crime runs at less than half the Cornwall rate. The whole year's tally would be a slow fortnight in a city. Nobody here locks the shed because of statistics; they lock it because sheds. This is the sort of place where an unfamiliar van gets noticed before it has finished parking.

Police.uk recorded 119 crimes across the area in the year to May 2026, giving a published rate of about 33 crimes per thousand residents. That sits roughly 55% below the Cornwall average. Both of those are published figures rather than anything worked out here, and the rate uses its own statistical population base rather than the village headcount.

Put the two side by side and the gap is obvious: about 33 per thousand here against roughly 74 per thousand across Cornwall as a whole. Cornwall is not a high-crime county by national standards, so being at less than half its rate is a meaningful position rather than a technicality.

The texture behind those numbers is unsurprising. Population density averages around 1,711 people per square kilometre across the area's small statistical zones, unemployment runs at about 2%, and roughly 1% of households are overcrowded. That is a settled, working, low-churn sort of place. None of those figures causes the crime rate on its own, but they describe the kind of area that tends to produce one like it.

On what the recorded crime actually consists of, treat the split gently. The totals are low enough that a handful of incidents shifts a share by several percentage points, so this is a snapshot rather than a characteristic. Violence and sexual offences account for about 64% of the local total against roughly 35% nationally, and that category needs its caveat rather than its headline: it is a broad statutory grouping that includes common assault without injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Public order sits at about 8% locally against roughly 7% nationally, and criminal damage and arson at about 8% against roughly 7%, both of which are close enough to call unremarkable. Anti-social behaviour runs at about 6% here against roughly 16% nationally, and vehicle crime at about 3% against roughly 5%.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how safe the place is, and the answer is less comfortable. Devon and Cornwall Police charge a suspect in about 8% of cases, against roughly 12% nationally, and the force ranks 42nd of 42 forces on that measure over the year to May 2026. Around 26% of cases are closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures covering a large and mostly rural area, not a signal about Probus specifically, but they are the honest answer to whether anyone gets caught. Low crime and low charge rates are two different facts, and living here gets you the first one.

Safety is about as strong as this page has to offer: a recorded crime rate less than half the county's, in a small settled village where the numbers and the feel of the place agree with each other.
