What are the schools like in Paddington?

For anyone buying or renting in Paddington.

The schools around Paddington are very good, and the official inspection record has no weak spot in it. Every graded school in the borough is good or better. More than a third are outstanding. None is rated below good. For most families the problem is getting a place.

Ofsted's published grades for the City of Westminster cover 25 schools, and all 25 are rated good or outstanding. Nine are outstanding and 16 good, with none graded requires improvement or inadequate. That is the whole borough, so Paddington shares the record with Marylebone, Pimlico and the rest of Westminster. A further 18 settings in the borough hold no published overall grade yet, so they are left out of that count, which says nothing either way about how good they are.

Distance is the least of the problems. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times from 2019 put the nearest primary about five minutes' walk from the average home and the nearest secondary about nine. Westminster City Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, so living a five-minute walk from a school does not by itself get a child in, and with a borough record this clean the competition for the best-known names is fierce. Families who bought a flat for the walk to the school gate can find themselves on a waiting list for one further away.

Among the primaries, Hallfield Primary School stands out because of its building. The school is listed and stands inside the Hallfield Estate conservation area, so the playground is on the same footing as the period terraces nearby, and any extension goes past a conservation officer first. Edward Wilson Primary School and St Mary Magdalene & St Stephen's CofE Primary School are among the others close to the district. Westminster Academy and Marylebone Boys' School are among the nearest secondaries, and United Colleges Group takes students past sixteen.

The local list has also shrunk recently. Three nearby schools have closed, including a primary academy and the hospital teaching unit at St Mary's, so an old school map or a cached search result may still point families at classrooms that no longer exist. Check Westminster's admissions pages for how places were actually allocated last year at the specific schools you want, since a list of good schools is only worth as much as your chance of getting into one.

Schools are one of Paddington's real strengths, with a borough record that has no gaps in it. The only challenge is winning a place at the one you want.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
