What are the schools like in Orpington?

For anyone buying or renting in Orpington.

Orpington's schools are very good, and the secondaries are the reason some families move here in the first place. The primaries post strong maths results. Two of the three local secondaries choose pupils by entrance exam. Almost every graded school in the borough is good or better. The hard part here is the admissions letter.

There are 11 mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils average a scaled score of about 108 in the Key Stage 2 maths tests. Warren Road, Tubbenden and Green Street Green primaries serve the bigger residential stretches, while Pratts Bottom and Downe primaries cover the villages on the rural edge. Darrick Wood has an infant and nursery school, a junior school and a secondary all carrying its name, so a child can grow up inside one school badge from nursery to sixteen.

Around here, the three mainstream state secondaries average a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of 68, the government's measure of results across eight GCSE subjects. Newstead Wood School and St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School both select through a highly competitive entrance exam, and Darrick Wood School is the local comprehensive. That average carries two grammar schools inside it, so the figure a family meets depends on how one exam goes at the age of ten. Parents who were sure their child would pass and parents who were sure they wouldn't both turn out to be wrong about once a year.

Bromley, the local authority, has 40 good or outstanding schools among the 41 that Ofsted has graded, which is all but one. Fifteen of those are outstanding, one requires improvement and none is inadequate. Another 48 settings across the borough hold no published grade yet. In Bromley, a school that merely requires improvement has very little company.

Places go by Bromley Council's published admissions rules, so a house near a popular school buys proximity and nothing more, and the grammar schools add an exam on top. The council publishes how far away the last child admitted to each school lived in recent years, and reading those distances for the specific schools you want is the single most useful twenty minutes a parent can spend before choosing a street in Crofton or Chelsfield. A house near Darrick Wood is described in the particulars by its distance to the school gate, and the council's admissions team works from a different document.

For families, schools are one of Orpington's real strengths: very strong across the board, with the main risk being that the best of them are as hard to get into as they are good.
