Is Olympic Park a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Olympic Park.

Olympic Park is a high-crime area, and nothing about the number is borderline. Its rate runs far above the rest of Newham. Shops and crowds account for a large share of it. Violence makes up a smaller share than usual. A neighbourhood built around a stadium and a shopping centre also gets the crime that follows big crowds and busy tills.

Police recorded 8,605 crimes across the area in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. That gives a published rate of roughly 362 per 1,000 residents, about 148% above the average for Newham. The figure counts everyone who comes to the park, the stadium and the shops, but the people who live here are the ones who see it all year round.

Newham's own rate over the same year was about 146 per 1,000 residents, so the comparison here is 362 against 146. Newham is a busy inner borough, so Olympic Park's figure stands out against a place that is far from quiet itself.

The area packs in about 30,000 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 3%, and about 8% of households are overcrowded. That describes a dense neighbourhood of working people in new flats rather than a struggling one. Most of the residents have jobs. A lot of the crime comes from the people passing through.

The crime mix explains most of the rate. Shoplifting accounts for about 19% of recorded crime here, against 8% across England and Wales. Theft from the person is about 14%, against 2% nationally, and other theft about 11% against 7%. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes assaults causing no injury, make up about 15% here against 35% nationally, so they are a smaller part of local crime than almost anywhere. Anti-social behaviour is about 15% against 16%, close to the national share. Drug offences are about 6% against 4%. Taken together, the area's crime is concentrated on tills and pockets more than on people's homes. The police's street-level crime map shows whether a particular block is next to where most of it happens or a few minutes' walk away, and that can make a real difference here.

The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts the force 33rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. That is a figure for the whole force, and it describes what happens after a crime is reported, which is a separate question from how much crime there is. About 53% of the force's cases close without a suspect being identified. Anyone who has had a phone taken in a crowd of thousands will understand why.

Safety is Olympic Park's weak point. A buyer here is moving next door to a crowd, along with the crime that comes with it.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
