What are the schools like in Okehampton?

For anyone buying or renting in Okehampton.

Good, and close enough to walk to. About eight in ten graded settings across the county hold a good or better rating. The town has its own primary, its own secondary, and a ring of village primaries feeding both. Modelled journey times put a primary and a secondary each about a quarter of an hour on foot. For a town at the edge of a national park, that is a considerably better hand than the geography suggests.

The numbers behind that come from Ofsted's register for Devon as a whole, not for Okehampton alone, so treat them as the weather rather than the forecast. Across the county, 138 of the 172 settings carrying a published overall effectiveness grade are rated good or outstanding, with 3 outstanding, 31 requiring improvement and 3 inadequate. A further 135 settings have no published grade at all, which means not yet inspected rather than quietly failing, and folding them into the total is the mistake most league-table coverage makes before it gets to the second paragraph.

None of that tells you whether your child gets in. Admissions are run on distance and published criteria rather than on which house you liked, and the school nearest the front door is not a promise the estate agent is authorised to make. Parents who check the current admissions arrangements before offering on a house tend to have a calmer March than parents who check afterwards.

Okehampton Primary School and Foundation Unit carries the town's name and takes the bulk of the town intake. St James Church of England Primary and Nursery School sits alongside it, sharing a name with the fifteenth-century chapel in the centre. Okehampton College is the secondary, and it is the only one for a long way in any direction, which settles the secondary question for most families before they have finished asking it. Beyond the town, a spread of small village primaries covers the surrounding parishes, from Hatherleigh Community Primary School out to Lydford Primary School and North Tawton Community Primary School and Nursery, most of them the kind of place where the whole school fits in one photograph.

Specialist provision has had a harder few years. A purpose-built school for children with autism and social, emotional and mental health needs opened in the town in 2023, and its building was destroyed by fire in February 2026. Any family who needs specialist places rather than mainstream ones should ask directly about what is running now, because that is a question the register answers slowly and a school office answers in a phone call.

On schools, Okehampton is doing better than its size, its remoteness and its house prices would predict. The secondary question has one answer and the primary question has several, most of them within walking distance, and a county-wide record where four in five graded settings come out good or better is not a record that needs excuses making for it.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
