Who lives in Notting Hill?

For anyone buying or renting in Notting Hill.

Notting Hill is mostly renters, and a lot of them have degrees. Seven in ten households rent. More than half the adults have a degree. Nearly half of all households are one person living alone. The homeowner in the pastel house is the least common resident in the district.

About 28% of households own their home. About 30% rent privately and about 41% rent from a social landlord. Notting Hill has two large rented sectors, and both are bigger than the share of owners. Landlords, public and private, own most of the front doors.

The typical resident is 39, and about 33% of people are aged 25 to 44. Notting Hill is a district of people in their working years, older than a student quarter and younger than a retirement town.

Median household income was about £72,000 before tax in the financial year to March 2023, as modelled by the Office for National Statistics and averaged across the area's neighbourhoods. That one figure covers both the social-rented estates and the stucco terraces, so it describes very few actual households. It is gross, modelled and several years old, and all three make it look healthier than a payslip.

The 2021 Census is the source for the household figures here. About 44% of households are a single person, and about 13% are a pensioner living alone, part of that same 44%. Couples with children make up about 12% of households, and lone parents another 12%. One in eight households is a family with a couple at the head, which is fewer than the school-run traffic on Ladbroke Grove would suggest.

About 55% of residents aged 16 and over hold a degree or higher, while about 14% have no qualifications at all. Full-time students are about 2% of residents. The figures put postgraduates and school leavers on the same streets, often in the same terrace.

About 84% of residents describe their health as good or very good. Across Kensington and Chelsea, preventable deaths run at a rate better than the England average, and the borough's smoking rate of about 8% is similar to England's. Both are borough figures set against an England benchmark, and they cover far more people than Notting Hill.

The people of Notting Hill come out middling on the measures: well educated and healthy, but the district has a lot of single households and modest home ownership. It is a district for renters and people living alone, with a smaller group of owners, and the average describes almost none of them.
