What are the schools like in Notting Hill?

For anyone buying or renting in Notting Hill.

The schools are the part of Notting Hill that lives up to the price. Nine in ten graded schools in the borough are good or better. Eight are outstanding. The local primaries post strong maths results. Finding a school isn't the problem here. Affording a house near one is.

There are 5 mainstream state primaries around here with published Key Stage 2 results, and their average maths score is about 109. Among them are Avondale Park Primary, Colville Primary, Thomas Jones Primary and St Clement and St James Church of England Primary. Five schools is a short list for a district this dense. Parents who want one of the five often end up competing for a handful of places.

Kensington and Chelsea's Ofsted picture covers the whole borough: 20 of its 22 graded schools are good or outstanding, which is nine in every ten. Eight of those are outstanding. One requires improvement and one is inadequate. A further 12 settings across the borough have no published grade yet, which tells you nothing about them either way. The borough has almost nothing at the bottom end.

Living near a school doesn't secure a place in it. The council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and the church primaries have their own criteria on top. So the street you buy on gets you into the running and nothing more. Read Kensington and Chelsea's admissions rules for the school you have in mind, and how last year's places were allocated, early in the search. The other schools nearby include Notting Hill Prep School, Norland Place School and Chepstow House School, so not every family round here is in the state queue at all. Seeing a school from the bedroom window is not the same as getting a place there.

Schools are one of Notting Hill's real strengths. The quality is there, and the hard part for a family is getting a home close enough to use it.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
