What are the schools like in Norton Fitzwarren?

For anyone buying or renting in Norton Fitzwarren.

Solid enough that nobody moves away over them, not so good that anybody moves in for them. The village has its own Church of England primary, about ten minutes on foot. Secondary means a drive into Taunton. Across the county, about seven in ten graded settings are good or better. That is an unglamorous, workable school picture, which is what most families need and almost nobody brags about.

Three mainstream state primaries serve the area, and the average score in the maths tests taken at the end of primary school comes in at about 104. Norton Fitzwarren Church School is the one carrying the village name, roughly eleven minutes' walk or seven minutes by car for a typical household, which puts it inside the range where a child can walk and a parent can still make a meeting. The others sit in the villages and Taunton fringes immediately around, close enough to be realistic preferences and far enough that you would drive.

Ofsted has published grades for 140 settings across Somerset, of which 101 are good or better and 5 are outstanding, while 32 require improvement and 7 are inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county rather than this village, so they describe the pool you are choosing from, not the school you would get. A further 81 settings have no published grade yet, which means unrated rather than unsatisfactory. Outstanding at 5 out of 140 is rare enough that treating it as a house-hunting target is a good way to spend a year looking at places you cannot afford.

Naming a school near a house is not the same as being offered a place at it. Admissions run through the council's rules and the applications everyone else submits, so the school at the end of the road is a preference on a form. Families who work that out in the autumn tend to be calmer in the spring than families who worked it out from a listing that used the word catchment as if it were a title deed.

For secondary, Monkton Wood Academy and Pyrland School are the nearest options, around eleven minutes by car, twenty-two by public transport and thirty-four on foot, which settles the question of whether your teenager walks. Taunton also carries a substantial independent sector, with Taunton School and its preparatory arm among the schools within easy reach, so the town's school-run traffic is a mix of two different economies heading in the same direction at the same hour. Specialist provision exists locally too, with Selworthy Special School serving the Taunton area.

The schools here are better than average without being a headline. A village primary within a short walk, a county where most graded settings are good or better, and two secondaries a short drive away add up to a place where the education question is answered rather than solved.
