Is North Petherton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in North Petherton.

Safer than a city, less safe than the county it sits in. Recorded crime here runs about a quarter above the Somerset average. Violence and public order both come in heavier than the national mix. Anti-social behaviour does too. None of that makes this a frightening place to live, but anyone who assumed a Somerset market town automatically buys them a quiet life should read on.

The published rate for the area is about 114 recorded crimes per thousand people, covering 506 offences over the twelve months to May 2026. That sits roughly 23% above the local-authority average. Both figures come from police.uk at neighbourhood level and both are published rates rather than anything worked out here, which matters because the rate and the raw count use different population bases and dividing one by the other produces a number that means nothing.

Put the two side by side and the gap is easier to hold. Somerset as a whole records about 93 crimes per thousand people over the same period. North Petherton records about 114. That is a real difference rather than statistical noise, and it is the kind of thing estate agents handle by talking about the church tower instead.

For texture, this is a built-up area averaging roughly 2,400 people per square kilometre, which is town density rather than village density however rural the surroundings feel. Unemployment sits at about 2% and overcrowded households at about 1%, both from the 2021 census. Those are the numbers of a settled, working, low-pressure sort of place. They describe the neighbourhood; they do not explain the crime figures, and anyone telling you they do is guessing.

The mix is worth reading properly rather than reacting to. Violence and sexual offences account for about 47% of recorded crime here against roughly 35% nationally, which sounds worse than it is until you know that the category is a broad statutory grouping stretching from serious assault down to common assault without injury, and that it is the largest category almost everywhere in England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour comes in at about 19% locally against roughly 16% nationally, and public order at about 9% against roughly 7%. On the other side, shoplifting sits at about 7% against roughly 8% nationally, other theft at about 5% against roughly 7%, and criminal damage and arson at about 5% against roughly 7%. The property-crime categories are all a shade below the national pattern. The interpersonal ones are all a shade above. That is the actual shape of it.

What happens after a report is a separate question and one people rarely ask until they need it. Avon and Somerset Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against roughly 12% nationally, ranking 24th of the 42 forces over the twelve months to May 2026. Around 30% of cases close with nobody identified at all. Those are force-wide decisions covering everywhere from Bristol to the Quantocks, so they carry no signal about this particular town, and they answer a different question from the crime rate entirely. One tells you how often something happens. The other tells you how often anyone is held to account for it, which turns out to be the more sobering number.

Safety is the softest spot in North Petherton's case for itself. The town is perfectly liveable and the risk of anything happening to you personally on a Tuesday in a residential close remains low, but the recorded picture sits below the standard the surrounding county sets, and pretending otherwise would mean ignoring the only crime figures anyone actually publishes.
