What are the schools like in Norbiton?

For anyone buying or renting in Norbiton.

Norbiton's schools are the part of the place nobody complains about. Every graded school around here is good or better. Primary maths results run high. The secondaries post strong exam numbers. Parents here end up arguing over which good school to pick, with no bad one in the running.

Around here, the 7 mainstream state primaries average about 109 on the scaled maths score at the end of primary school. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about a seven-minute walk from the average home. Names nearby include Coombe Hill Infant School and Coombe Hill Junior School on the higher ground towards Coombe, and St Luke's CofE Primary School closer in. The rest are spread across the same few streets, so the choice is mostly about which way you turn out of the front door.

At sixteen, the 3 mainstream state secondaries in the area average 75 on Attainment 8, the government measure built from each pupil's best eight exam results, weighted by pupil numbers. The nearest secondary is about a nineteen-minute walk or about seventeen minutes by public transport on the same 2019 modelling. The bus times are the part of that estimate most likely to have aged. The Kingston Academy is the nearby secondary most families will know, and Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School are both on the local list. Three schools is a short list, and it fills up fast.

Ofsted has graded 22 schools across Kingston upon Thames, and all 22 are good or outstanding. That is every one of them, with 8 rated outstanding and none at requires improvement or inadequate. Another 24 settings across the borough have no published grade yet, which says nothing either way about them. With nothing below good on the list, parents argue about good versus outstanding, which is about as small as a school worry gets.

Kingston upon Thames council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and living close to a school helps but does not secure a place there, however short the walk. The useful check is the council's record of the furthest distance it offered places at the school you want in recent years, because that figure changes year to year and the house you are viewing either falls inside it or doesn't. Kingston Grammar School and Rokeby are also nearby for families who would rather pay fees than read admissions rules. A good school two streets away only helps if the admissions rules agree you live close enough.

Schools are one of Norbiton's real strengths, and the hard part for parents is getting a place, not finding a good school.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
