What are the schools like in Newington, Swale?

For anyone buying or renting in Newington, Swale.

The schools around Newington are good, and the arithmetic is on their side. The local primaries score above the expected standard in maths. The secondary results sit well up the table. Nine in ten Kent schools with a grade are rated good or better. Finding a good school here is the easy bit. Getting a place in one is where the effort goes.

At primary level, the 11 mainstream state primaries in the area average about 104 on the end-of-primary maths score. That is a comfortable result rather than a spectacular one, spread across village schools that are small enough for the head to know who has forgotten their PE kit. Newington Church of England Primary School is the one carrying the village's name. Lower Halstow Primary School serves the estuary end of the patch, and Hartlip Endowed Church of England Primary School covers the village to the south. Most families here are choosing between a few small, church-linked schools a short drive apart, not between a good school and a bad one.

At secondary level, the one mainstream state secondary counted in the area posts a pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score of about 63. One school is a small sample, so take it as a pointer, not a league table. In practice, families look west towards Rainham, where Rainham Mark Grammar School comes with an entrance test, or east towards Sittingbourne, where The Howard School is the name that tends to come up. Living in a village means the secondary decision is really a decision about which direction the school bus runs.

Ofsted's figures cover the whole of Kent, not just Newington. Across the county, 221 of 245 graded settings are rated good or better, which is roughly nine in ten. Of those, 38 are outstanding, 21 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. Plenty of other settings have no published grade yet. That tells you nothing either way, so leave them out of the sums. The Kent figures set the baseline, and the local primary results come out above it.

None of this guarantees a place. Admissions run on each school's own criteria, and church schools often set their own on top of distance. Buying the house closest to the school gate improves your odds but decides nothing. The grammar route adds an exam, which puts some of the outcome in a ten-year-old's hands. Check each school's admissions policy for the year you're applying, not the one the estate agent quoted from memory.

Schools are one of Newington's real strengths: primaries above the maths standard, a county where most graded schools are good, and a choice of secondaries in both directions. The weak point is the admissions letter, not the education.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
