Is New Romney a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in New Romney.

Yes. New Romney is one of the rare places where "quiet" in the listing turns out to be accurate. Crime runs well under the district rate. Almost nobody is out of work. Overcrowding barely registers. The main danger to a new arrival here is boredom, and that isn't a police matter.

The New Romney area recorded 664 crimes in the twelve months from June 2025 to May 2026, giving a published rate of about 61 crimes per 1,000 residents. That rate is the official figure, calculated on the statistical-area population the police data uses, and it sits comfortably below the local average.

For the comparison in plain numbers: the New Romney area runs at about 61 per 1,000 against about 85 per 1,000 across Folkestone and Hythe as a whole. Same district, same police force, same year, and a clear gap between the two. Whatever the district's busier streets are producing, the marsh is producing less of it.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is not crowded or pressured. Across the area's small statistical districts, density averages about 2,077 people per square kilometre, unemployment sits at 2% and overcrowded homes at 2%. None of that explains crime on its own, and nothing here claims it does. It describes the kind of place the figures come from: spread out, settled, and mostly in work or retired from it.

On the mix, violence and sexual offences account for 46% of recorded crime here, against 35% across England and Wales. That sounds worse than it reads. The category is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without any injury, and it is the largest category almost everywhere; in an area with little theft or disorder, whatever remains takes a bigger share of a smaller total. Anti-social behaviour is 16% locally and 16% nationally, level pegging. Other theft is 10% against 7%, criminal damage and arson 8% against 7%, and public order offences 5% against 7%. Other crime makes up 4%, against 2% nationally. Apart from the headline violence category, the local mix sits close to the national one: nothing about it points to a particular problem the area has that others don't.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer is a force-wide one. Kent Police, the force covering the area, charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it sixth of 42 forces over the twelve months from June 2025 to May 2026. That is the force's figure, not New Romney's own, and it says nothing about how safe any street is. The honest answer to "will they catch them" sits alongside it: across the force, about 36% of cases close with no suspect identified. Better than most forces is still not the same as good odds, and anyone who has had a shed broken into will already know that.

New Romney is a safe place to live, and safety is one of the area's real strengths. The figures are low, the comparison with the rest of the district is clear, and the local mix gives no reason to think otherwise.
