The area around Nazeing is open country with water running through it, and most front doors are a short walk from both. Parks and open spaces are close. Water is closer. The village itself has very little in the way of shops, so the high street happens somewhere else. Nazeing is for people who want to walk out of the gate into the fields and are happy to drive for a coffee.
The nearest green space is about 190 metres from the average home, and there are about four green spaces within a kilometre. That is close enough for a dog walk that starts without anyone reaching for the car keys.
Water is even nearer. The nearest blue space, a river, lake or other stretch of water, averages about 140 metres from the door, and there are about 44 of them within a kilometre. The sheer number tells you that this is wet, low country.
The National Cycle Network is further off, averaging about 2.6 kilometres away, and none of Nazeing's postcodes count as close to it. Cyclists here start on the lanes and the main roads, and the signed national routes come later.
For the wider surrounding area, the rated-premises count comes to 166 shops, 24 pubs and 18 restaurants, alongside 322 offices. Those cover a much bigger area than the village, and the everyday reality in Nazeing is that most of it is a drive away. The village itself has two food premises with a hygiene rating.
Fine-particle air pollution across the local council's district averaged about 7.7 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024.
The parish is a cluster of small places more than one centre: Nazeing, the larger Lower Nazeing, and hamlets such as Bumble's Green and Nazeing Gate, with Roydon, Dobb's Weir and Harlow around the edges. Among the scheduled monuments nearby is a Second World War bombing decoy, a site built to convince enemy aircraft that the fields were a target worth hitting. It is the one time anyone has tried to make Nazeing look busier than it is.
Private gardens are generous. The Office for National Statistics measures about 342,000 square metres of garden per 1,000 residents across the area's two neighbourhoods, which is a lot of lawn per person. With houses mostly detached or semi-detached, much of the outdoor life here happens behind a fence, on land the owner mows.
The business rating list records 21 rateable premises in the village, a mix of commercial and other uses. These are premises on the valuation list, which is a different thing from businesses trading today, and a village with 21 of them runs on a handful of local businesses and everything else being somewhere else.
Of the two food premises with a published hygiene rating, one holds the top score of five, and none sits at the low end. Two premises are too few for a pattern, and an evening out mostly means driving to one of the bigger places nearby.
No area of outstanding natural beauty, site of special scientific interest or ancient woodland overlaps Nazeing. The countryside here is ordinary working farmland and water meadow, and nobody designated it because nobody needed to. It is green, open and close by all the same, and residents get the benefit without the extra planning restrictions those designations carry.
The countryside is where Nazeing does best. Fields and water are a couple of minutes from almost every door, and that makes up for a lot of driving.
