Is Nazeing a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Nazeing.

Nazeing is a safe place to live, and a little safer than the district around it. Crime runs slightly below the local average. Unemployment and crowding are both low. The mix of offences leans a little more towards cars and break-ins than the national picture, though the numbers are small enough that a few bad weeks can swing that.

Essex Police recorded crime in and around Nazeing at about 71 offences per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, with 249 crimes in total over those twelve months. That published rate is roughly 7% below the Epping Forest average. The 249 cover the wider statistical areas around the village, so they include more than just the lanes in the parish.

Across Epping Forest district as a whole, the rate over the same year was about 76 offences per 1,000 residents, against about 71 for Nazeing. The gap is real but modest. Nazeing comes out a little better than its district, which is less of a compliment than it sounds, because nobody looks at Epping Forest district as a crime problem in the first place.

The area itself is open country with houses in it. Density averages about 139 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 3% and about 5% of households are overcrowded. Those figures describe the neighbourhood's texture and nothing more, and a low reading on each tells you about the place without explaining any particular crime.

By category, violence and sexual offences make up about 39% of the crime here, against about 35% nationally. That is close to the usual, and the category is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury. The bigger differences are further down. Vehicle crime makes up about 12% here against 5% nationally, burglary about 7% against 4%, public order about 10% against 7%, criminal damage and arson about 9% against 7%, and other theft about 8% against 7%. With only 249 crimes in a year, a handful of incidents moves any of those shares by several points, so the mix describes a year in the village and may well look different the next. For a buyer, the police's street-level crime map for the specific lane, over several years, gives a better sense than one year's percentages of whether the car and burglary figures come from one corner or are spread across the parish.

What happens after a report is a force-wide matter. Essex Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 28th of 42 forces. About 37% of cases across the force are closed with no suspect identified. Those figures describe Essex Police as a whole and say how often reports end in a charge, which is a different question from how often crime happens in Nazeing.

Nazeing is one of the safer places to live in this part of Essex. The crime that does happen tends to involve parked cars and empty houses far more than people.
