What are the schools like in Leytonstone?

For anyone buying or renting in Leytonstone.

The schools are the easiest part of buying in Leytonstone. Almost every graded school in the borough is good or outstanding. The primaries post maths results well above the expected standard. None of the borough's schools is rated inadequate. Families who arrive braced for a fight over schools mostly find they have less to fight about than they expected.

There are eight mainstream state primaries in the area, and their pupils average a scaled score of about 108 in the Key Stage 2 maths test. That puts them comfortably above the expected standard the test sets. Davies Lane Primary School and Gwyn Jones Primary School are on the Leytonstone side, George Tomlinson Primary School is nearby, and Our Lady of Lourdes RC Primary School gives families a Catholic option. Ten-year-olds who can do sums like these will be doing their parents' mortgage maths before long.

The four mainstream state secondaries in the area produce an Attainment 8 score of about 50, averaged across their pupils. Leytonstone School carries the place's name and is the one most local families look at first. Connaught School for Girls offers a single-sex option nearby. Families who settle on a primary and leave the secondary until later have less to worry about here than in most of London. They should still look before Year 6, because the secondary is the one that decides where the family is living when the eldest is fifteen.

Ofsted has graded 23 of the 25 Waltham Forest settings it currently rates as good or outstanding, so nearly all of them clear that bar. Seven of those are outstanding, two require improvement, and none is inadequate. Another 46 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, and those say nothing either way. A borough where only two graded schools fall below good gives parents very little to complain about at the school gate, and very little stops them complaining anyway.

Waltham Forest allocates places using the admissions rules it publishes each year, so living a few streets from Davies Lane Primary School, or within sight of Leytonstone School, does not guarantee a place at either. Distance, siblings and, for church schools such as Our Lady of Lourdes, the school's own faith criteria all count. The one practical check is to read the council's admissions booklet for the year your child starts. It sets out how far from the gate last year's offers reached, and that matters more to a buyer than which school is closest on the map. Parents who skip it tend to find out in April, when the offer letters arrive.

In Leytonstone the schools are the strongest reason a family has to stay, and the house prices are the main reason some of them leave.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
