Is Leytonstone a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Leytonstone.

Leytonstone is about as safe as the rest of Waltham Forest, which makes it an ordinary stretch of busy East London. Its crime rate matches the borough's almost exactly. Shoplifting and anti-social behaviour take up more of the total than they do nationally. Violence takes up less. Most of what gets reported here happens on the High Road and in its shops, and much less of it happens on the residential streets behind.

The Metropolitan Police recorded about 107 crimes per 1,000 residents in Leytonstone in the year to May 2026, or 8,307 offences in total. That is a published rate on the police's own population base, and it puts Leytonstone level with the borough. For a district with a tube station, a bus station and a long high street, a total of that size is roughly what you would expect.

Across Waltham Forest as a whole, the rate over the same twelve months was also about 107 per 1,000. Leytonstone matches its borough almost exactly. Anyone hoping it is the safe corner of the borough, or worried it is the rough one, will find it is neither.

Leytonstone is crowded, with about 12,400 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 4%, and about 11% of households are overcrowded. That describes a dense inner suburb of flats, terraces and a lot of people sharing pavement. None of those figures explains the crime rate by itself, but they show the kind of place the crime happens in.

By category, violence and sexual offences make up about 23% of Leytonstone's recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 21% against 16% nationally, shoplifting about 15% against 8%, and vehicle crime about 8% against 5%. Other theft is level with the national share at about 7%, and public order is slightly below it at about 5% against 7%. The shoplifting happens at the 484 shops on the business rates list, which is a long way from anyone's sofa.

The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases across London, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole of London, and they say nothing about how likely Leytonstone is to suffer crime in the first place. They describe what tends to happen after a report, and the answer is often nothing. The useful check for a buyer is the street-level crime map on the police.uk website for the exact road, because the High Road and a cul-de-sac off Cann Hall share one headline rate and very little else.

Leytonstone's safety is middling. It is a busy, crowded part of East London with a busy high street's crime figures, and a buyer who expects a dense area to be as calm as a suburb is expecting the wrong thing.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
