Who lives in Launton?

For anyone buying or renting in Launton.

Launton is a village of about 1,400 people, most of them homeowners in the second half of their working lives. Eight in ten own. The typical resident is nearly fifty. Households earn well. Students are close to nonexistent.

Ownership is the defining fact. At the 2021 Census, which is the source for every population figure on this page, about 82% of Launton's households owned their home, about 12% rented privately and about 6% rented from a social landlord. Most of the people who live here have bought in, and very few are passing through.

The typical resident is 49, and only about 21% of the population is aged 25 to 44, the years when people tend to buy a first home and start a family. The career-building happened somewhere cheaper, and it paid for the house here.

Money is comfortable. The Office for National Statistics models gross household income for the surrounding area at about £73,500 for the financial year to March 2023, before tax and averaged across a wider area than the village. It is the kind of income that buys a detached house with a garden, and Launton is largely built of exactly that.

The households split between families and people on their own. About 23% are couples with children and about 5% are lone parents. About 23% are one person living alone, and most of those, about 16% of all households, are pensioners on their own. The school run and the bungalow coexist, often on the same road.

Education covers the full range. About 34% of adults hold a degree, about 18% have no formal qualifications, and only about 2% are full-time students. The person who fits your kitchen and the person who designed it are likely to be neighbours. With no campus nearby, nobody's dragging a duvet down the high street every September.

Of the 1,374 residents, 50 live outside private households, in a communal setting such as a care home or similar shared accommodation. That is a small group, too few to shift the age profile or the household figures much. Every other share on this page describes the private households that make up nearly all of the village.

Launton's population is a strong point for the village: owners with good incomes and established lives, a household mix that holds families and retirees together, and very little churn. Newcomers looking for a young crowd will need to drive into Bicester for it.
