Is Henlow a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Henlow.

Henlow is safe, and safer than the council area around it. Its crime rate comes in about 15% under the local average. Unemployment is low. Hardly any homes are overcrowded. Getting anyone charged after a crime is a separate and less cheerful matter.

The police recorded 321 crimes in Henlow in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 55 per 1,000 residents. That puts Henlow roughly 15% below the average for Central Bedfordshire.

Across Central Bedfordshire as a whole, the published rate over the same twelve months was about 65 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Henlow's 55. The gap is real without being dramatic, and Henlow gets the better side of it.

Henlow has about 1,250 people per square kilometre on average across its statistical areas. About 2% of working-age residents were unemployed at the 2021 census, and about 2% of households were overcrowded. Those figures describe the place where the crime happens. They do not explain it.

The mix needs handling with care. Violence and sexual offences make up about 29% of Henlow's recorded crime against about 35% across England and Wales, so the category that usually dominates is a smaller share here. It covers everything from serious assault down to common assault with no injury. Anti-social behaviour is about 26% of the local total against 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 13% against 5%. Public order offences are close to the national share, at 8% against 7%. Criminal damage and arson, and other theft, are each about 5% here against about 7% nationally. With only a few hundred crimes in a year, a handful of incidents in either direction can redraw these shares, so a single year's chart is a weak basis for saying what kind of crime Henlow has. If you leave the car on the drive, the vehicle figure is the one to note.

Charging is a force-wide figure that tells you nothing about Henlow's streets in particular. Bedfordshire Police charged a suspect in about 10% of cases over the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 36th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 38% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. This answers what happens after a report, and has nothing to say about how often one is needed. Henlow's low crime rate does the work that the force's charging record does not.

Henlow is a safe place to live. The crime it does record is modest, comfortably below the county area around it, and the weaker figures belong to the police force.
