What are the schools like in Headcorn?

For anyone buying or renting in Headcorn.

Good, and the odds across the county are firmly on your side. Nine in ten graded schools are rated good or better. There's a primary school in the village. Secondary school means a bus or a lift. The primary years are the easy part, and the teenage commute is the part to plan.

Ofsted has published an overall grade for 245 schools and settings across Kent, and 221 of them are rated good or outstanding, about nine in ten. There are 38 rated outstanding, 21 that require improvement and three rated inadequate. These counts cover the whole local authority, not only Headcorn, so they describe the pool Headcorn families choose from rather than the village's own classrooms. Another 255 settings have no published grade yet, and that tells you nothing either way about how good they are. The county picture is strong. The parents who worry anyway are the ones who read the three inadequate schools before the 221 good ones.

Headcorn Primary School is the one with the village's name on it, and for most families it's the obvious first call. Department for Transport modelling from 2019 puts the nearest primary about 14 minutes' walk away on average across the Headcorn area, or about eight minutes by car. Families on the outlying farms and hamlets will do more of that by car than on foot. Nearby villages have their own primaries, including Smarden Primary School and Sutton Valence Primary School, so there's choice for anyone living on the edges of the area.

Secondary school is where the journey gets longer. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 17 minutes away by car and about 34 minutes by public transport. On foot it's more than an hour and a half. Secondary schools named in the wider area include The Lenham School and Cornwallis Academy. There's also Sutton Valence School nearby for families looking beyond the state sector. The public transport times date from 2019 and bus services have been withdrawn in plenty of places since, so check the current school bus route rather than trusting the model. A Year 7 child's independence here comes down to the bus timetable.

Living near a school is not the same as getting a place at it. Admissions run on the council's published rules for each school, usually starting with siblings and distance, and a named school on a property listing guarantees nothing. Buyers who choose a house because the listing mentions a school, and then skip the admissions criteria, sometimes find out in April that the listing didn't mean them. Check the rules for the specific school against the specific address, and check the previous year's allocations, before the offer goes in.

Schools are one of Headcorn's real strengths. The countywide record is excellent, the village has its own primary, and the only real work is planning the ride to secondary school.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
