What are the schools like in Harrietsham?

For anyone buying or renting in Harrietsham.

Harrietsham's schools are the best argument for moving here. The village has its own primary. Nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. Secondary means a drive. The weak link is the school run, not the schooling.

There are ten mainstream state primaries in the Harrietsham area, and at the end of primary school their pupils averaged a maths score of about 104. Harrietsham Church of England Primary School sits in the village itself, about eight minutes by car or 23 minutes on foot from the typical home, going by Department for Transport modelling from 2019. Lenham Primary School and Hollingbourne Primary School serve the villages either side, which matters in a place where the nearest school is not always the one down your road. Parents who assume the closest gate is automatically theirs tend to learn otherwise in April.

Ofsted has graded 221 of Kent's 245 rated schools and settings good or better, which is nine in ten, and 38 of those are outstanding. At the other end, 21 were judged to require improvement and three were rated inadequate. These are county-wide counts across the whole local authority, not a tally of the schools around Harrietsham, so they describe the odds rather than any particular classroom. The odds are good.

Secondary is where the geography starts charging. The Lenham School is the nearest option by name, and the typical home sits about 12 minutes from a secondary by car, 32 minutes by public transport and 49 minutes on foot. That walk is long enough to become a family negotiation every winter morning. Invicta Grammar School and Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School are also on the wider list, and grammar places are won by the child rather than by the postcode, whatever the estate agent implies.

None of this guarantees a place. A school's name on the local list does not put your child on its register, and admissions are decided by the rules each school and the county set each year, not by how close the listing says you are. Anyone buying mainly for a particular school should check that school's own admissions history before exchanging, not after the offer letter arrives.

Schools are where Harrietsham is strongest, with a primary in the village and a county grading record that most buyers would take without argument. The only real cost is the miles to secondary, and that is a price paid in petrol rather than in quality.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
