Is Harrietsham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Harrietsham.

Harrietsham is safe, and safer than the Maidstone that its post is sorted through. Recorded crime sits comfortably below the borough average. Violence makes up a smaller share than it does nationally. The local force charges more often than most. The thing that tips the mix here is nuisance, not danger.

Across the Harrietsham area, police recorded 790 crimes in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 81 per 1,000 residents. That sits roughly 14% below the Maidstone borough average over the same twelve months. For a patch that includes the M20 corridor, the A20 and a railway station, that is a respectable place to land.

To put the two side by side: about 81 recorded crimes per 1,000 residents here, against about 94 per 1,000 across Maidstone as a whole. The gap is real without being dramatic. Nobody should mistake it for a village where nothing happens, and nobody should mistake it for a place with a problem.

The texture of the area goes some way to explaining why the numbers look like this. The small statistical areas that make up the patch average about 1,200 people per square kilometre, unemployment was about 1% at the 2021 Census and about 2% of households were overcrowded. That describes a settled, spread-out, mostly working area, the kind of place where the neighbours notice a strange van before the police do.

The mix is where it gets more specific. Violence and sexual offences made up about 30% of recorded crime, below the national share of about 35%, and that category covers a wide legal range including common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour ran at about 23% against 16% nationally, the one category where Harrietsham is noticeably over the norm. Shoplifting accounted for about 11% against 8%, criminal damage and arson about 9% against 7%, other theft about 8% against 7% and vehicle crime about 6% against 5%. Most of those sit close to the national pattern. Anti-social behaviour is the outlier, and it is the kind of crime that ruins an evening rather than a life.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how much crime there is, and the answer comes from the force, not the village. Kent Police charged a suspect in about 16% of cases over the same year, against about 12% nationally, which puts it sixth of the 42 forces in England and Wales. About 36% of cases across the force closed with no suspect identified. That is the honest answer to "will they catch them": better odds than most places, and still not good odds.

Harrietsham is one of the safer choices around Maidstone, with a crime rate below the borough's and a mix that leans toward the irritating rather than the frightening. Anyone buying here is far more likely to be annoyed by the neighbourhood than hurt by it.
