What are the schools like in Hanwell?

For anyone buying or renting in Hanwell.

Hanwell's schools are strong, and the borough around them is stronger. More than nine in ten graded schools are good or better. None is rated inadequate. Most homes are a short walk from a primary school. Finding a good school here is easy, and the work for parents is getting a place at one.

Ofsted has graded 39 schools across the London Borough of Ealing, and 36 of them are good or outstanding, which is almost all of them. Fourteen are outstanding, 22 good and three require improvement, and none is inadequate. Another 49 settings have no published grade yet. They are new, waiting for a first inspection or excluded from the count, so their absence from the figures says nothing about them either way.

The nearby list includes Brentside Primary School, Hobbayne Primary School and St Mark's Primary School at primary level, and Elthorne Park High School and Brentside High School at secondary. No individual grades for these schools are given here, so check each one's latest Ofsted report yourself. Ealing Council allocates places under its own published admissions rules, which means a house near a school gate does not secure a place there. Look up the council's admissions criteria and last year's offers for the schools you want before the house becomes the deciding factor. Buying next to a playground is a hope, and the council's rules decide whether it comes off.

On the Department for Transport's modelled times from 2019, the nearest primary is about 7 minutes' walk from the average Hanwell home and the nearest secondary about 12. The bus to the secondary takes about 11 minutes, slightly quicker than walking. With secondary schools that close, the school run tends to end at eleven whether the parents are ready or not.

One name on the nearby list stands out: Ysgol Gymraeg Llundain, the London Welsh School. The westernmost corner of London's post town turns out to have a school option further west than anyone moving here expects.

Schools are where Hanwell is easiest to recommend. The borough's record is close to spotless and the gates are a few minutes' walk from most front doors, so the real competition is for places.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
