Is Grays, Essex a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Grays, Essex.

Grays is about as safe as the rest of Thurrock, almost to the decimal point. Crime runs level with the borough. Car crime is the one thing it does more of than the national mix. Anti-social behaviour comes in lighter. For the town that houses the borough's headquarters, matching the borough average this closely is about right.

Essex Police recorded 5,214 crimes in Grays in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 103 per 1,000 residents. That puts the town level with its local authority. The figure covers a full year, so no single bad month moves it much.

Across Thurrock as a whole, the published rate for the same twelve months was about 102 per 1,000. Grays and its borough are a point apart. The town that runs the borough also sets its average, which is what a county town is supposed to do.

Grays is a dense place, with an average of about 7,160 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment was about 3% at the 2021 Census, and about 8% of households were overcrowded. That makes it a busy, working, built-up town where people live close together. None of those figures explains the crime rate, but they describe the streets it is counted on.

The breakdown by type is more useful than the total. Violence and sexual offences made up about 34% of recorded crime in Grays, close to the 35% for England and Wales, and that category covers everything from serious assault to common assault with no injury. Anti-social behaviour was about 11% of reports, against 16% nationally. Vehicle crime was about 9%, against 5% nationally, and that is the one clear outlier. Shoplifting was about 9% against 8%, criminal damage and arson about 8% against 7%, and other theft about 7% against the same share nationally. Essex Police's street-level map shows where on a particular road those vehicle offences cluster, and a driveway or a lit, overlooked parking bay is worth more in Grays than the national pattern would suggest. In a town where the car is the most common way to get to work, the car is also what gets stolen.

Charging decisions are made across the whole force, so Grays has no charge rate of its own. Essex Police charged a suspect in about 11% of cases over the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, ranking it 28th of 42 forces. About 37% of cases were closed without anyone being identified. That measures what Essex Police manages once a crime has happened. How likely a crime is to happen in Grays is the separate question the rate above answers.

Grays is middling on safety, and in a very consistent way. It sits at the borough's average and close to the national mix on most crimes, and a car parked off the street is the main extra precaution.
